one of my all time favourite raptors, and birds in general. these are majestic birds of prey and australia's 3rd largest raptor. this is george at osprey house, sunshine coast (a must visit on the sunshine coast for anyone who loves birds and is based in brisbane). george is taking a breather from the missus and kids. look at the size of those chunky feet and talons! they predominantly live on fish, diving into the water talon first to catch them. this is not without risk, as there is a chance that the bird may not be able to get back out of the water and potentially drown. also known as "fish hawks", although they are not true hawks, but in their own sub-family.
ospreys, like peregrine falcons, suffered a major global decline in the early 1970s due to the pesticide dDT, before it was globally banned. thankfully, their global numbers are on the rise again. truly majestic and beautiful birds.
