Australia's smallest member of the Falconidae family, the Nankeen Kestrel. This is a female, noted by the Rufous coloured head and tail. They are superb hunters, often hovering over rural fields, looking for rodents, amphibians etc.
Please take a moment to stop using Rodenticides (rat poisons). These are responsible for secondary poisoning of a great many Australian raptors. Rodent eats poison and dies. Raptor eats dead rodent and ingests poison. Please use alternative rodent elimination methods.
Barbed wire fences are also a massive issue for our raptors, including the Nankeen Kestrel (and also the Black-Shouldered Kite, Brown Falcon and several Owl species). Please do not use barbed wire for fencing.
